7. 10 tips for motorcycle cleaning and care

1. Good to know

If you attach importance to a perfect visual impression and want to maintain the value of your motorcycle, then regular cleaning and care of the bike and especially individual, heavily used parts, such as the chain, are essential.
But it is not only about the appearance. Poorly maintained motorcycles can even become a safety risk. If, for example, damage due to corrosion is overlooked, this can lead to motorcycle parts breaking. In extreme cases, unmaintained chains can break and lead to serious accidents.

When caring for them, always pay attention to the surface you are working on. On the motorcycle there are many different materials such as:
- painted metal parts (like the tank)
- coated metal parts (like chrome)
- painted plastic parts (like the fairing)
- unpainted plastic parts (like fenders, mirrors)

The most common and intense contaminations are:
- Oil contamination in the engine area
- grease dirt on chain and rear wheel
- Insects, road dust all over the motorcycle
- Metal abrasion from the chain set and brakes

The multitude of materials and also of dirt variants on the motorcycle place particularly high demands on cleaning and care products. Only products that completely remove the most diverse types of dirt and at the same time do not damage the material in any way can be considered first-class care products.

1.1 The S100 motorcycle cleaning products

The S100 motorcycle cleaners consist of specially developed cleaning components (the so-called surfactants), which infiltrate both oil and grease contamination and remove it from the material. In addition, complexing agents supplement the formulas. They "coat" dirt particles in such a way that they can be easily rinsed off with a water jet.
Such cleaning processes take some time. Especially in the case of stubborn dirt. Therefore, the cleaning product must not run off the treated surface prematurely. S100 Total Cleaner + has therefore been equipped with its super gel formula. Even on vertical surfaces, it sticks longer without drying and can develop its full effect. So even extreme dirt does not stand a chance.
The material itself is not touched. S100 Total Cleaner + does not contain any aggressive ingredients. This means that the surfaces are optimally protected.

1.2 The difference to cheap, acidic or strongly alkaline cleaners

Cheap motorcycle cleaners are usually very simple in composition. Here, highly effective substances that are absolutely harmful to the material and the environment, such as acids, are often used. This initially gives the impression of a fast cleaning effect. But in reality, the material is attacked. Damage to paintwork or staining of metal parts occurs and in some cases there may even be effects on the health of the user. Weaknesses in the application, such as an uneven spray pattern or low yield, also indicate an inferior product.
S100 cleaning products are precisely adapted to ALL important requirements through continuous research and extensive test series. The cleaner itself is the focus, but also the choice of the best spray gun, the material of the cleaner bottle or even the quality of folding boxes and labels play a role.
This ensures that S100 cleaners meet the highest quality requirements at all times.

2. The correct care of painted surfaces and plastics

Painted metal or plastic parts on the motorcycle are exposed to widely fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. Weathering and UV radiation cause them to weather over time. But the ravages of time also gnaw away at matt, unpainted plastics. Materials that become dull and unsightly due to scratching and weathering can, however, be restored to perfect condition.

2.1 Removing gloss haze

Weathered paint layers scatter the incident light. Our eye perceives this as a veil. By applying a high-quality paint polish, the paint surface is smoothed and the fine, weathered paint layer is removed. As a result, the light is no longer scattered and the paint reappears in a rich, deep color.

2.2 Gloss enhancement

When light is reflected without scattering, it creates what we call gloss. This reflection of light can be greatly increased with the right polish. The paint acquires a brilliant shine.

2.3 Scratch removal

Good paint polishes do not cover scratches in the paint, but remove them. The finest abrasives are used for this purpose. They must be matched in such a way that fine scratches are permanently removed, but the paint is not additionally attacked.

2.4 Sealing

In addition to polishing, complete paint care always includes sealing. It acts like an additional protective layer and keeps dirt and fine scratches away from the paint. Due to the optimal coordination between silicone and wax components, it is possible to achieve an easy application and at the same time an ideal long-term effect. S100 Paint and Plastic Polish gives all painted metal and plastic parts a perfect high gloss. Scratches and weathered layers of paint are removed. At the same time, the surface is effectively sealed.

2.5 Unpainted plastic parts

Unpainted, smooth and textured plastic parts require special care because they lack the protective coating layer. In the absence of care, the plasticizers in the plastic volatilize due to heat, UV rays or chemicals. The result: the plastic becomes brittle and fragile and increasingly visibly bleaches out.

3. Chain care tips

1. The chain cleaning

1.1 Why the chain should be clean

Friction is constantly generated between the chain and the sprocket during riding, as well as between the chain links. This loosens fine metal abrasion and the chain inevitably becomes dirty. Together with the residues of chain lubricants, sand, road dirt, etc., a stubborn coating is formed on the chain and sprocket. This coating prevents the active ingredients of a chain spray from creeping deep between the chain links - lubrication becomes impossible. So if you never or rarely clean the chain, the lubrication of the chain becomes increasingly ineffective. The spinning off of chain grease increases because the lubricant can no longer creep between the chain links, but remains on the surface. So for it to "run" optimally, it is not enough to lubricate the chain from time to time. A chain is only really well maintained if it is thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis.

1.2 What to use to keep the chain clean

Due to its special formulation, the S100 chain cleaner combines optimum creeping ability with perfect adhesion. The cleaning power is thus completely unfolded, the stubborn dirt is grabbed - and that automatically, without long scrubbing. The cleaner is also absolutely compatible with the material, it increases the smooth running properties and protects against wear.

2. Protecting the chain from wear

2.1 How the chain lives longer

Strong forces act on a motorcycle chain. The constant friction that occurs between chain and sprocket, but also between the individual chain links, is minimized by lubrication with chain sprays. However, a chain spray only does this if it is applied regularly and sufficiently and has strong adhesion to the surface. Insufficient lubrication quickly leads to signs of wear such as elongation of the chain (it sags and needs to be retightened) or visible wear marks on the sprocket.

It pays to avoid this. Because a regularly maintained chain set has a much higher mileage and does not need to be replaced prematurely. A well-maintained chain contributes to safety when riding a motorcycle.

2.2 What to protect it with

S100 White Chain Spray is virtually spin-free for a clean rear rim. Excellent creeping ability for longer chain set mileage. Longer lubrication intervals. Best corrosion protection, effectively protects against rust. Optimum lubricating properties from -30°C to +110°C.

Excellent wash-off resistance (rain rides, motorcycle washes). Contains PTFE. Maintains O/X/Z rings and keeps them supple.

3. Chain care tips

Relubricate the motorcycle chain every 500 to 1,000 km.
Clean the chain before lubrication at least every 2,000 km, ideally before each lubrication.
Make sure that you only use cleaners for chain cleaning that guarantee O-/X- or Z-ring compatibility.
Always spray the chain spray thinly and evenly and then allow it to flash off well - overnight is ideal.
